Dr. Mom & Dad on Call

Poor Marshall was sick on Friday night. He was up all night (along with the two of us). Fortunately, each time he was sick, he made it to the bathroom. Good boy. I eventually slept with him in his bed (don't ask us how...but we managed it) and crawled out at 6:50 and dragged myself into ours. He had a pretty good day on Saturday. Didn't eat much, but kept it all down, for which we are very thankful.

3 year Check-up

We had a GREAT doctor's visit today. Marshall and Shaylen are doing very well and are right on track. Here are their new stats!

Marshall:

Height: 3'4" (in the 96th percentile)

Weight: 36.5 lbs. (in the 85th percentile)

Slated to be 6'3" and about 180 pounds (based from his growth chart)

Shaylen:

Height: 3'2" (in the 75th percentile)

Weight: 34 lbs. (in the 75th percentile)

Slated to be 5'6" and 140 lbs. (based from her growth chart)

Dr. Faucette has no concerns and is very pleased with how they are doing. So are we!

The CBC Christmas Program

We had a great Christmas program last night at Cornerstone Baptist Church. Most of the program went off without a hitch. We were excited to see over 250 in attendance (a record for Christmas programs) and, I don't think, any empty chairs!

Marshall and Shaylen did a great job with their part and we were thankful to have it videotaped for us, since we weren't able to personally watch it.

A big "thank-you" to Irma Mospan (the photographer who did our Christmas pictures) who sent me these digital shots this morning. Because of her, I am able to share them with you.

A Mess!

Marshall and Shaylen were playing in Shaylen's room this morning while I cleaned the bathroom. They were happy and content and so I didn't interrupt...it allowed me to give the bathroom tub a good scrubbing.

The next time I looked, they had all of Shaylen's blankets, comforter, and sheets off the bed! They were putting Snoopy, Brownie, Cameron and Auntie Janellee Giraffe (their stuffed animals) "to bed".

I laughed inwardly and called to Taigen to come upstairs. When he reached the top of the steps, I told him, "Look at what your kids did while I was cleaning."

He looked and laughed. He then asked Marshall, "What did you make?"

Without a pause to think, Marshall replied, "A Mess!"

Yuck!

Well, Marshall and Shaylen have had colds this past week and along with them, they have had gunk in their eyes in the mornings. I kept a close watch on it. However, today when I got Shaylen up from her nap, there was an increase in the eye "junk." I called the pediatrician and they got them both in this evening.

They both have the beginnings of pink eye and Marshall also had the beginnings of an ear infection in his right ear. (I've never known when they got those...they display NO symptoms!!!) They are both on meds and I'm figuring that I'll get the pink eye before long.

Dr. Faucette did mention that they would probably be able to still participate in the Christmas program on Sunday night (what a relief...!). They've worked so hard and are excited to sing their songs and "read" their book.

On her way to Bethlehem

Shaylen has a backpack from Dad and Cathy. It attaches a baby on the front of the backpack so you can walk around with the baby and backpack combined. This morning, Shaylen brought the backpack to me and asked that I attach the baby to the pack and zip up the zipper.

"The baby needs to be in his car seat. We're going to Bethlehem!"

Away In A Manger

Last night I went and got my hair cut by Chris Wheeler. She has taught the 2 & 3 year olds Sunday School for a million years and has fabulous ideas. She sent me home with hay, whole peanuts, a split toilet paper roll, and a cut up piece of a napkin...all of which were to be used to make a cute little "baby Jesus" lying in a manger. As I was making these with the kids this morning, we were singing "Away in a Manger." They had a ton of fun!

Later as they were off and doing their own thing I hear Shaylen singing it...her way.

Not for Consumption

Shaylen has just learned the meaning of "Not for Consumption". She has also learned that Play-Doh doesn't taste good-- despite how great it may look.

First Major Snowstorm of the Season!!!

I don't think we were supposed to get this much, but hey, I'll take it all!

It looks beautiful. The Saco schools even had a delayed start to the school day so our neighbors' kids were out shoveling and playing in the snow early this morning. Marshall and Shaylen are enjoying watching it...while listening to their new soundtrack of Mary Poppins!

Happy 3rd Birthday Marshall and Shaylen!!!

We had a great party on Saturday with friends and Marshall and Shaylen made out like bandits. They LOVED their chocolate cupcakes (Shaylen) and strawberry cupcakes (Marshall) and have continued to enjoy some of the leftover ones as well.

We are so fortunate to have friends who will take the time to help us celebrate. The kids enjoyed having Auntie Janelle(babysitter and adopted auntie), Mr. and Mrs. Bowman, Uncle Jason, Auntie Joni and Enzo (adopted relatives from Mass.), Matt and Jessica Krupnek (she helps in Sunday School every once in a while)and Grandma and Grandpa Mac(Adopted grandparents here in Maine). It meant a lot to the kids to have everyone there.

Today is their official birthday and we are going to celebrate with a dinner they like (which really could be anything...they aren't picky eaters), leftover cupcakes and ice cream, and they are going to open gifts from the grandparents and us. They can hardly wait. I have a bit of a cold & it's in my throat, and so my attempts at singing "Happy Birthday" were met with "Mommy, don't sing" or "Mommy, your singing sounds bad" (it wasn't meant as a rude comment, only factual). So...we'll settle for Taigen singing and the phone calls from relatives. They haven't complained about those today. I'll take the hint and keep quiet.

It is so hard to believe they are three. So big, so fast. God is good.

It's Snowing in Maine

We got up this morning and opened the curtains to see a light coating of snow and little flakes falling. It is so beautiful. Finally, it is looking like Christmas could really be just around the corner!

Toddler Semantics

Last night on the way home from church, Taigen and I were talking. From the back of the van we hear Shaylen say, "Daddy, excuse me, Daddy."

Taigen said, "Yes, Shaylen."

She said, "Daddy, excuse me, but I want to tell you a question."

It was so hard to not laugh at her. She's got the right concept though.

Marshall was singing "Feed the Birds" today from Mary Poppins. Here's how he was singing it:

Let the Games Begin

Tonight officially starts the volleyball season for those on the city leagues here in Saco. Break out the knee pads, the sweat pants & the white t-shirt. Oh yeah...and the Advil and ice packs.

I (Crystal) look forward to this season. I get to play with Wendy Maskell. She's a friend from church as well as a neighbor. She graciously invited me to play last year. Janelle was convinced to join us this year too. I'm looking forward to seeing how competitive she really is.

Update: Hey...we had a good first night. We are in the "B" league, (read that "Below Average") and we ended up practicing against two "A" league teams last night. Needless to say, we rot. There is no doubt in my mind that we BELONG in the B league.

One of the teams we practiced against last night had some tall players so it made for an interesting few games for me when I was up on the net. We were up against two teams that have a good spirit and are friendly. I love that. We have two new players on our team and I am looking forward to getting to know them.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We are excited for Thanksgiving this year. We will be having the Bowmans, Trena Penney and Scott Lowicki over to our home. Trena and Scott both don't have family in town so we adopted them as family for the day. The Bowman children are all down in South Carolina at Bob Jones University. A Trip Down Memory Lane

The kids birthday is right around the corner. I thought I would let you see the progression of our lives. Watching this brings tears to my eyes and gratefulness to my heart. Taigen and I have much to be thankful for: The happiest marriage in the world and two very precious lives: Marshall and Shaylen

New Beds in a New Room

Here are some pictures of Marshall and Shaylen on their new beds. Sherry bought them their comforters and sheets. They love them and they look perfect in their new rooms.

This also gives you a peek at their rooms. Marshall's we changed from a light blue to a dark blue and Shaylen's we changed from light pink to a cream. Marshall's accent colors are primary: red, yellow and light blue (with a hint of that sage green from the afghan and in the comforter) and Shaylen's are a bright pink and green polka dot that are in her comforter and curtains.

Hello!

Greetings from cool and crisp Maine!

We have mowed the lawn for the last time this year and the majority of the leaves and dead branches are off the lawn. It looks so good and I know that Taigen is glad to have accomplished that task. Looking at our calendar I realize that it is filling quickly. I can hardly believe the kids will be three in less than a month. 2007 is just around the corner.The holidays are always a time of mixed emotions for us since we cannot be near our biological families. However, we are spending Thanksgiving with our adopted family from the church and it should prove to be a grand time.

A Bit of Humor

November 7th: This morning the kids came downstairs after they were all dressed. We have the computer on and a continual stream of pictures scroll on our computer as our screen saver. Recently I sent pictures of Taigen and me in our wedding garb to someone and so they were on the thread of pictures to display. As I came down the stairs this morning, Shaylen greeted me at the bottom and said that they "saw the prince and the princess and it was Mommy and Dadding and they were marriage!!!" I said, "Did you see Mommy and Daddy in the picture of their wedding? Were we getting married?" "Yes" she said, "and Daddy was a prince and Mommy was the princess!" Nothing like an almost 3 year old to boost your self esteem early in the morning!Shaylen is watching me type this and I've already posted the pictures. She just said, "When I am a mommy and a big girl, I will get married and I will be a princess!"

Tonight we were headed out to church and I stepped outside and said, "Oh it smells so good! Someone has their fireplace burning!" Shaylen was coming out with me and I told her, "Do you smell the wood? It smells good!" She came out, sniffed and quickly opened the screen door and told Taigen, "Daddy, quick! Do you smell the wood? It's the tire-place and it smells good!"

Master Bedroom

I thought I would start posting a series of views of our house. This post will be of our bedroom. We decided to go bold and go with a purple hue. When we tell most people "purple" they think of Barney. I would rather say "eggplant." We love how it turned out. We have two different shades in the room and we think it looks cozy and warm.

 

Guest Room

Umputer

um.pu.ter: formally known as "computer"; n. A device that computes, especially a programmable electronic machine that performs high-speed mathematical or logical operations or that assembles, stores, correlates, or otherwise processes information.

I love the fact that the kids are talking about everyone and everything. Marshall carries around a purse that I was going to sell in the yard sale and he USED to call it his purse. I told him, "Marshall, boys don't have purses, they have briefcases." So now, he is walking around with his "briessecase." Marshall and Shaylen both get excited when we go out to eat...which isn't often, because it means they get french fries! They know that they can only get those french fries at the "Estraunt!" Since we got DSL I can stay connected to the internet all the time. Frequently I will be playing with them and I will hear the "beep" letting me know that I got a new email. I will go and sit down to read it, and most likely, respond. They will come over and ask, "Mommy, are you done with the "umputer?"

Fee Fo Fum

October 19th: Marshall loves playing wtih the numerous balls from their ball bin. He grabs one of my old purses that I've thrown in their toy bin and stuffs it completely full with balls. He then walks around the house and says to me, "Mommy, I need to bring my briessecase!" This evening we were playing in the basement and Marshall said, "Fee Fo Fum, I smell a gingerbread man!"

Photo Session

October 9th: We got our pictures taken today by Irma Mospan, a photographer that attends our church. She had given us the photo shoot as a Christmas gift last year and we are just now getting around to redeeming it. She seemed excited about how they were looking. We will get to see them on Sunday! Let's just hope that some will be good enough for our walls and possibly our Christmas card this year!

Nursery Rhymes

October 5th: Shaylen has been quoting this recently:

Boys and girls come out to play,

Leave you supper and leave your sleep,

And come with your playfellows into the street.

Come with a goodwill or come not at all.

You find milk and I'll find flour,

And we'll have pudding in half and hour.

Truly amazing, don't you think? She quotes the whole thing...seriously! She's also been quoting the Curious George books we purchased for them at the local library book sale. Anyone looking at her would think that she was really reading.

Play-Doh

po.ta.to: formally called "Play-Doh" n.; a commercial modeling compound similar in texture to bread dough that has been sold as a children's toy around the world for a half century.

Tonight before baths we were playing with some Play-Doh. Taigen was doing all sorts of neat things with it and the kids were having a ball. Literally. They were rolling it up and trying to bounce it. When it was time to clean up, Taigen said, "All right...it's time to put the Play-Doh away." After a brief moment Shaylen said, "But I don't want to put my potato away!"

Sickos

September 26th: Taigen has completely finished painting the basement so we were able to actually sit down and relax last night. This morning there is other news to be had. Poor Shaylen woke up this morning at 6:30 and was throwing up! Oh No! There wasn't much of a mess...I'm wondering if her phlegm from her coughing (leftovers from a cold) made her gag. So I got her cleaned up, took off her jammies and took away wet blankets, etc. etc. She went back to sleep, believe it or not. At around 7:30 she cried out for me again and when I went in, she was coughing again and starting to throw up. I took her to the bathroom (where there is no carpet) and she proceeded to throw up a little bit more. I cleaned her up a bit more (new jammies, new blankets) and brought her to our room and snuggled with her wrapped in a blanket. Poor peanut. She seems to be doing fine now and says that her tummy is "feeling better." She's walking around singing about Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego.

Baaabe!

September 22nd: This morning we were all downstairs playing. Marshall went upstairs to get something and then wanted to tell me something before he came back down. He called for me, "Moooommy!" I answered, "Yes, Marshall?" He must not have heard me because he called to me in a louder voice "Baaaaabe!" (hmmm sounds like his father). I just about died laughing to myself.

Sweet Talkin'

September 20th: This morning after breakfast Marshall and Shaylen were playing in the living room on the couches. Marshall had just buried himself in the pillows and Shaylen was trying to talk to him. Of course, he couldn't hear a word she was saying. He said, "What did you say sweet baby?" Hmm...sounds like their mother.

Dead...Like a Bug!

September 18th:Tonight after dinner we were discussing the Bible stories we had read about during the day. (We had been to a garage sale on Saturday and I had purchased a Bible story book and we are now making our way through it.) Of course, the story of David and Goliath came up. It is their favorite story. Marshall said, "Goliath was almost 10 feet tall! He fell down dead! Like a bug!"

A while back he told the same story except he said, "He fell down dead. He got a big boo-boo!"

Family Picnic at Fort Williams

We took a day and went and enjoyed the great weather at Ft. Williams in Cape Elizabeth. This is where you see the popularly photographed Portland Head Light (Lighthouse). We had a great time and the kids enjoyed the fresh air.

Mary Poppins

September 14th: Since they have been sick they have watched Mary Poppins a few times. Enough to have some parts memorized. They are now going around the house singing "Supercalifragi LIPSTICK expealidocious!"

A Visit to the Local ER

September 2nd: Well, after naps yesterday Shaylen was still feeling hot. It was too soon to give her more Advil. Around 4:00 Shaylen started this jerking action that really scared me. It wasn't like a seizure, and not like shivering. It was a happy medium. Janelle showed up (thank the Lord!) and she noticed it too. We were both concerned. Shaylen's skin was mottled and she was so hot & lethargic. I called the pediatricians office at 4:30. After explaining the symptoms the nurse relayed to me that the doctor wanted me to go to the ER.

Thankfully, Janelle was there to watch Marshall and allowed me to take her car (which had our old carseats in it) to the hospital.When we got to SMMC (Southern Maine Medical Center) in Biddeford the triage nurse took her temp (103.5) and gave her some tylenol. Then we proceeded to wait in the lobby FOREVER!!! Finally around 7:00 we were taken back into the ER. There we waited another 1/2 an hour for the doctor to come in the room and he did a quick checkeroo and said that some people do that jerking when they have those high fevers. It was probably just a viral infection. He said he was going to go and examine her urine sample and see if she had some other infection.

He left us there for another 1/2 an hour. I quoted the stories of Cinderella, three Curious George stories, the Gingerbread tale and Goldilocks and the Three Bears before he finally came back. He checked Shaylen again and looked at her rash, her bum, her legs and chest and told me she was fine, it wasn't seizures and not to worry. I informed him calmly and tactfully that it was the dr that had told me to come in. Soooo, finally at 8:05 we were on our way home. Shaylen hadn't had dinner. She was an angel. You would have been so proud of her. Her fever was back up to 103.7 this morning, but she seems to be more active today and there has been no return of the jerking! Praise the Lord.

Zippered

September 2nd:I was putting Shaylen to bed tonight and we sang "Jesus Loves Me." After that was over, I asked Shaylen what she wanted to sing next. She said, "The zipper one." I said, "Zipper? I don't know that one, honey. Sing a bit of it for me." She said, "ZIPPER." I said, "The bird song? (We had just finished watching a bit of Mary Poppins and the last scene we saw was Mary Poppins singing "Feed the Birds.") "No," she said, "The Zipper." I thought for a moment. "The Shepherd song?" "Yes!!!" So I sang "Jesus Tender Shepherd Lead Me." I need a linguistics degree.

Two Sickos, Two New Beds

September 1st:Last night the kids got their new big boy/girl beds. They look so little in them! They went to bed so well. No fussing and no fits. We have such good kids!Unfortunately, Marshall got sick in the night and ended throwing up twice. They don't quite understand at this point so he was pretty scared. The first time he was in his bed. Fortunately, only a little got on the sheets. Unfortunately, most of it got on Marshall and Taigen. We cleaned them up and I took Marshall to our room and rocked with him for a bit. He started to cry again so I stood up to take him to the bathroom (where there is no carpet). He promptly threw up all over himself and all over me. We ended up giving him another bath. Thankfully, Shaylen slept through the whole thing. She is sick today. Don't know exactly what is wrong with her, but she is running a fever (102.6). I'm giving it time, but if she's not better by this afternoon, I'll probably take her to see the pediatrician. She's currently sitting on the couch listening to her Care Bear that tells her stories (from Grandma Sherry). She's so sweet.

"I Growed Up"

September 1st:Well, Shaylen went to bed last night with a bit of a fever. I told her this morning that I would need to take her temperature again today to see if she had a fever. Later on in the morning, I heard Shaylen tell Marshall, "Mommy needs to take my temper!"Marshall was sick last night. VERY sick. He threw up...twice. Poor baby. This morning he said to Shaylen, "I growed up my lunch & dinner."

Precious Prayers

August 30th: This morning I put the kids in their high chairs. I went into the kitchen and put some grapes in little bowls and brought them to the table. I said, "Would you like some grapes?" Shaylen said, "Yes! But we need to pray first!"

Spiritual Toddlers

August 29th: Today the kids were playing in Shaylen's room while I was putting away laundry. The sheets from Shaylen's air mattress were being washed so the mattress was leaning upright against the wall. Marshall was crawling behind it and said to Shaylen, "Let's hide!" Shaylen said, "God can see us!"

Eyelashes

August 27th:On Saturday we had a garage sale. We had a great time and were able to get rid of some of the stuff that has been cluttering up our basement, shed and backyard. One of those items was a small portable playyard that someone had found on the sidewalk and thought of Marshall and Shaylen. Marshall and Shaylen had outgrown it and weren't playing with it anymore. Taigen sprayed it off and placed a $10 sticker on it. Soon, our neighbor was over with her little 9 month old, Ashley. She said, "Are you selling the playyard?" "Yes!""Sold! I have been wanting something like this for Ashley for a long time. She's not old enough yet, but she will be all too soon!"

When Marshall and Shaylen wanted to know why Taigen moved it to the neighbor's yard, we told them that it was now Ashley's.

So, Sunday morning we come out of the house to get into the van for church. Shaylen saw the playyard and said, "It's Eyelashes." I thought, "HUH?" So I asked her, "What did you say?""That's Eyelashes."Then I got it...Ashley's! We got a good laugh out of the confusion on Shaylen's part.

Little Tooter

August 25th: We had the Back to School Burger Bash with the teens at the home of one of our church members last night. We were all sitting around a campfire and Taigen started into his devotional. At a pause...we hear a very loud toot! It was obvious that everyone had heard it too because there were snickers. Taigen said, "I'm sorry...you'll have to excuse my son." I quickly said, "It was your daughter!" Marshall was on my lap and I'm sure I would've felt that one! She's just like her daddy!

Sweet Talker

August 14th: The other day, Shaylen was whining about something downstairs. Marshall said, "It's okay...I'm here!" He also said the next day, "I'll be back, sweetie!"

Anemone Song

August 13th Yesterday morning the kids were at the table eating breakfast and I was up getting my coffee. Shaylen asked, "Sing the anemone song, Mommy!"
I thought, "Anemone song?"
"Shaylen, I don't know an anemone song."
"MOMMY...sing the anemone song!!!"
"Shaylen, what is the anemone song? You sing it for me."
"No, Mommy. Sing the anemone song. The one in the van!"
Then it dawns on me what we have been singing to at home and in the van. It's on a CD we have in the van.
"I may never march in the infantry,
Ride in the cavalry,
Shoot the artillery,
I may never zoom o'er the ENEMY,
But I'm in the Lord's army. Yes Sir!"

Some Light Reading

August 6th: This Sunday evening Brenda Bowman (a friend in our church) had a tickle in her throat. She decided to go to the bathroom and clear it out so she left the service. When she got in the ladies room she heard the nursery worker with Marshall. He was in a stall going to the bathroom.
"Is that my Marshall in there?"
He said, "Come in!"
She peeked her head in the handicap stall where he was. "Are you going potty?"
"No. I'm going poo-poo!"
"Oh."
"Do you have a magazine?"

A boy named Ethan is in the 2's and 3's Sunday School class with M & S. He says that Shaylen is his "favorite girl." When I said to Shaylen one night, "Shaylen, do you know that you're my favorite girl?" She said, "No, I'm Ethan's."

A Good Eater

August 5th:When Taigen asked Marshall where his dinner went (obviously, he ate it) he replied, "It went down the drain!"

Colorado Trip

We had a great time in Colorado in July. I thought I would post some of these pictures from our trip. I was able to spend my birthday there, which I haven't done in a LONG time. The kids loved all of the spoiling and all of the time with Dad and Cathy. They are still talking about it.
