Shape Poems

During English a couple of weeks ago, the kids were instructed to create a shape poem. A shape poem doesn't necessarily rhyme, but the words are so descriptive and it is written in the shape of the object you're writing about, that without mentioning it specifically the reader is able to deduce what the poem is about.

The kids really enjoyed this project. I encouraged the kids to write down descriptive words and then we looked up those words in the thesaurus so that they could be even more colorful. Boy did they have fun with that! The finished products were so good that I had to post them!

Marshall's says: "It dwells within a huge community. It soars in the blue sky. Flying with heavy wings, it is a ginormous Boeing Bird. Ascending high, people are transported. The sun glints off its shiny wings."

Shaylen's says: "On a bright sunny day a tiny insect glides in the air. It has spots and it stops to sit nectar from flowers. Antennas help lead the way."
